Back Pain Can Be Serious

Back pain is a serious problem that effects many people. One study implied that more than 80% of Americans will experience an episode of back pain at some point in their life. The worldwide percentage of people that suffer with back pain would be difficult to determine, but it is a good bet that it is a substantial number.

Back pain can be caused by muscle strain, pinched nerve, slipped disc, inflammation, arthritis, kidney infections, cancer of the spinal cord, ruptured disc, herniated disc, ligament strain, radiculopathy, sciatica, skeletal irregularities, Fibromyalgia, and so on.

Lower back pain is rarely related to serious underlying conditions like infections and tumors, but that still needs to be considered.

Kidney stones can cause a sharp pain in the lower back and that pain will usually be predominant on one side.

The point is that there can be a variety of reasons why your back hurts, and your first goal should be to figure out what that reason is.

How Do You Find Out What’s Wrong With Your Back?

Get a physical examination by a health care provider. They can run a series of tests and will often be able to pinpoint exactly what the problem is. That will help you determine what course of action would be best. Unfortunately, with chronic lower back pain it is often difficult to determine the cause. A history of previous episodes, diseases, and health conditions may be related to the pain.

A physical examination can determine movement or limited movement, intensity of the pain, general location, and type of pain (dull, radiating, stabbing). That in itself is a wealth of information.

Other tests might include an X-ray, a CT scan, a Myelogram (contrast dye), Discography, MRI, Electromyography (EMG), Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS), Evoked Potential Studies (EP), Bone Scans, Ultrasound Imaging, and blood tests for inflammation or infection. In other words, there is a wide variety of tests available for a practitioner to use. Once they have completed their initial physical exam, they can determine which tests would be best, or if any further testing is even necessary.
